Dioctyl Phthalate
Dioctyl Phthalate (DOP/DEHP) is a general-purpose PVC plasticiser for cables, flooring, synthetic leather, hoses and films, used where regulations permit.
- Also known as
- DOP
- Grades / forms
- Plasticiser
Overview
DOP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, DEHP) makes rigid PVC soft and flexible. For decades it was the default plasticiser because it is efficient, compatible with PVC, easy to process and economical. It is still widely used in cables, flooring, coated fabrics, hoses and footwear in many markets.
DOP is restricted in a number of regions and applications. In the EU it is a substance of very high concern and is restricted in toys, childcare articles and many consumer articles, and in electrical and electronic equipment under RoHS. Buyers should confirm that their end use and destination market permit DOP; DOTP is the usual non-phthalate alternative.

Questions
Dioctyl Phthalate, answered.
DOP (DEHP) is restricted in the EU under REACH and RoHS, including in toys, childcare articles, many consumer articles and electrical and electronic equipment. Other regions have similar rules. The end use and destination market should be confirmed before ordering.
Dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) is the most common non-phthalate replacement for DOP. It has similar performance, lower volatility and is not classified as a substance of very high concern.
DOP has been widely used in PVC cable compounds, but RoHS restricts it in electrical and electronic equipment sold in the EU. Electrical-grade DOP with high volume resistivity is available for markets where it is permitted.
