Paint driers are metal carboxylate catalysts — cobalt, manganese, zirconium, calcium and others — that speed up the oxidative drying of alkyd paints, inks and varnishes.

Overview
Alkyd and oil-based coatings dry by reacting with oxygen. Primary driers such as cobalt and manganese catalyse surface drying; through driers such as zirconium and calcium ensure the whole film cures evenly.
Driers are supplied as solutions in mineral spirits at set metal contents, singly or as combination blends; cobalt-free systems are available.
