Overview
Made from coconut shell, coal or wood and activated by steam or chemicals, activated carbon has an enormous internal surface area — often over 1000 m² per gram. Organic molecules, chlorine and many contaminants stick to that surface and are removed.
It comes as powder (PAC) for dosing, as granules (GAC) for filter beds and as extruded pellets for gas treatment. Iodine number, mesh size and hardness are the main buying points; coconut-shell grades are preferred for gold recovery and drinking water.
Applications
- 1Drinking water and wastewater purification
- 2Gold recovery (carbon-in-pulp / carbon-in-leach)
- 3Decolourising sugar, food and pharmaceuticals
- 4Air, gas and solvent recovery
- 5Aquarium and point-of-use filters

Questions
Activated Carbon, answered.
Granular carbon goes in filter beds and can be regenerated; powdered carbon is dosed directly and removed with the sludge.
It is hard, resists abrasion in the pulp and has the fine pore structure that adsorbs gold cyanide well.
A measure of adsorption capacity for small molecules; higher means more fine pores.
