Overview
Aluminium sulphate dissolves to release aluminium ions that hydrolyse into aluminium hydroxide floc, trapping turbidity, colour and bacteria so they can be settled and filtered out. It is inexpensive, well understood and approved for potable water almost everywhere, which is why so many municipal plants are designed around it.
Two grades cover most demand. Non-ferric alum, with very low iron, is used for drinking water and for paper, where iron would discolour the sheet. Ferric alum carries more iron and is a lower-cost choice for effluent and industrial water. Both are available as lumps, kibbled granules or powder to suit the plant's dissolving equipment.
Applications
- 1Coagulation in municipal drinking water plants
- 2Rosin sizing and pH control in paper making
- 3Industrial and municipal effluent treatment
- 4Mordant in textile dyeing
- 5Phosphate inactivation in lakes and ponds

Questions
Aluminium Sulphate, answered.
Non-ferric aluminium sulphate has a very low iron content and is used where iron would cause colour — potable water and paper making. Ferric alum contains more iron, costs less and is suited to effluent and industrial water treatment.
Often, yes. Aluminium sulphate consumes alkalinity as it hydrolyses, so soft or low-alkalinity water may need lime or soda ash to keep the pH in alum's effective range of roughly 6 to 7.5. PAC is an alternative where this is a recurring problem.
Kibbled alum suits most dissolving tanks and dissolves steadily without dust. Powder dissolves fastest and is preferred for small plants and dry feeders. Lumps are the lowest-cost form for large plants with dedicated dissolvers.
Yes. Cosmo Chemistry manufactures and exports Aluminium Sulphate from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in the water treatment and mining & oil drilling industries. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.
Every shipment of Aluminium Sulphate from Cosmo Chemistry includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
