Muriate of Potash
Muriate of Potash (MOP, potassium chloride) is the main potassium fertiliser, with 60% K₂O, for fruit, vegetables, sugarcane and NPK blending.
- Also known as
- MOP
- Grades / forms
- 60% K₂O
Overview
Muriate of potash is potassium chloride mined from potash deposits. With 60% K₂O, it is the most concentrated and economical source of potassium, which plants need for water regulation, disease resistance, fruit quality and sugar content.
It is supplied in standard (fine) grade for direct application and NPK manufacture, and granular grade for bulk blending. Colour ranges from red to white depending on the source. Some chloride-sensitive crops, such as tobacco and certain fruits, use sulphate of potash instead. Industrial-grade potassium chloride is used in drilling fluids for shale inhibition.
Applications
- 1Potassium fertiliser for fruits, vegetables and potatoes
- 2Sugarcane, oil palm and cereals
- 3NPK bulk blending and compound fertilisers
- 4Shale inhibition in drilling fluids (industrial grade)

Questions
Muriate of Potash, answered.
Red muriate of potash contains traces of iron oxide from the ore, while white MOP is more refined. Both supply about 60% K₂O and perform equally as fertilisers; white grades are preferred for soluble and industrial uses.
Chloride-sensitive crops such as tobacco, some fruits and certain vegetables can be harmed by the chloride in muriate of potash. Sulphate of potash (SOP) is used for those crops.
Fertiliser availability depends on origin and on export rules that can change by season. Origin, availability and lead time are confirmed with every quotation.
