Polyanionic Cellulose

Polyanionic cellulose (PAC-LV and PAC-R) is a fluid-loss control and viscosity additive for water-based drilling muds.

Also known as
PAC-LV
Grades / forms
LV & R grades
01

Overview

PAC is a highly substituted carboxymethyl cellulose that tolerates salt and hard water better than ordinary CMC. The low-viscosity grade (PAC-LV) controls fluid loss without thickening the mud; the regular grade (PAC-R) controls fluid loss and builds viscosity.

It is used in fresh-water, seawater and salt-saturated muds and in completion fluids, and is supplied as a free-flowing powder.

Questions

Polyanionic Cellulose, answered.

PAC-LV controls fluid loss without adding much viscosity; PAC-R does both.

PAC performs better in salty and hard-water muds.

Grades are offered to API 13A specification.
