Potassium Amyl Xanthate
Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) is a powerful flotation collector for copper, nickel, gold-bearing and other sulphide ores.
- Also known as
- PAX
- Grades / forms
- ≥ 90%
Overview
Xanthates attach to sulphide mineral surfaces and make them water-repellent, so air bubbles carry them to the froth. PAX has a longer carbon chain than ethyl or isopropyl xanthates, making it stronger and less selective — ideal for bulk sulphide and oxidised-surface flotation.
It is supplied as yellow pellets or powder, dissolved on site to a 10–20% solution. It must be kept dry and cool, as moisture and heat break it down.
Applications
- 1Copper and nickel sulphide flotation
- 2Gold-bearing pyrite and arsenopyrite
- 3Zinc and lead circuits (scavenger)
- 4Platinum group metal ores
Packing & storage
Packing
- Steel drums with liners
- Wooden boxes with liners
- 850 kg jumbo bags
Storage & handling
Keep sealed, cool and dry; xanthates decompose in heat and moisture, releasing flammable carbon disulphide.

PAX has a longer chain, so it is a stronger, less selective collector.
As a freshly made 10–20% solution, usually within a day or two.
Moisture and heat decompose xanthate, losing strength and releasing carbon disulphide.
