Overview
Allantoin helps soften skin and supports the skin's natural renewal, which is why it is used in products for dry, irritated or sensitive skin and after-shave care. It is gentle and compatible with most ingredients.
It is a white, odourless powder used at 0.1–2%.

- Description
- A white or almost white, crystalline powder.
- Solubility
- Slightly soluble in water, very slightly soluble in ethanol.
- Identification – By TLC
- The principal spot in the chromatogram obtained with test solution (b) corresponds to that in the chromatogram obtained with reference solution (a).
- Identification – By litmus paper test (blue to red)
- A dark blue colour develops, which becomes red after cooling and pouring into about 10 ml of water.
- Identification – By litmus paper test (red to blue)
- On heating about 0.5 g, ammonia vapour is evolved, which turns red litmus paper blue.
- Acidity or Alkalinity
- To 5 ml of solution A add 5 ml of carbon dioxide-free water, 0.1 ml of methyl red solution and 0.2 ml of 0.01M sodium hydroxide, the solution is yellow. Add 0.4 ml of 0.01M hydrochloric acid, the solution is red.
- Optical Rotation (on solution A)
- -0.100° to +0.100°
- Reducing Substances
- The solution remains violet for at least 10 min.

- Not more than 0.1 %
- Loss on Drying (1.0 g, oven at 105°C)
