Calcium Chloride
Calcium chloride is a hygroscopic salt used in drilling and completion brines, de-icing and dust control, concrete acceleration and as a food firming agent.
- Grades / forms
- Flakes & anhydrous · Food grade E509
Overview
In oil and gas, calcium chloride brines give the weight needed to control well pressure without solids, and they inhibit swelling clays. On roads it melts ice at lower temperatures than common salt and holds down dust by drawing moisture from the air.
It is supplied as flakes (74–77%), anhydrous prills or granules (94–97%) and as liquid. Food grade (E509) is used in cheese making, tofu and canned vegetables.
