Overview
Methanol is the simplest alcohol and a building block for formaldehyde, acetic acid and biodiesel, as well as a solvent and antifreeze. Isopropyl alcohol is the standard cleaning and disinfecting alcohol, also used in inks, coatings and electronics. Acetone is a fast-evaporating ketone that dissolves resins, adhesives and cellulose acetate.
All three are clear, volatile and flammable. Buyers specify purity and, above all, water content, because water affects reaction yields, drying and cleaning results. Methanol is commonly bought against the IMPCA reference specification; IPA and acetone against ASTM or pharmacopoeial standards.
Applications
- 1Methanol: formaldehyde, biodiesel and chemical synthesis
- 2IPA: cleaning, disinfectant and hand-rub formulations
- 3IPA: electronics cleaning, inks and coatings
- 4Acetone: resin, adhesive and coating solvent
- 5Acetone: cellulose acetate and cleaning
- 6All three: extraction and process solvents

Packing & storage
Packing
- 160–165 kg steel or HDPE drums
- UN-rated 1000 L IBCs
Storage & handling
Highly flammable. Store in cool, ventilated, earthed areas away from ignition sources and oxidisers. Methanol is also toxic (UN 1230, Class 3 + 6.1); IPA ships as UN 1219 and acetone as UN 1090, both Class 3.

Questions
Methanol / IPA / Acetone, answered.
The IMPCA reference specification is the international quality standard for methanol published by the International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association. It sets limits on purity, water, acetone, ethanol, colour and other impurities, and most international methanol is bought against it.
Yes. All three are Class 3 flammable liquids. Methanol (UN 1230) also carries a Class 6.1 toxic subsidiary risk. IPA ships as UN 1219 and acetone as UN 1090. Packaging, labelling and the IMDG declaration are prepared for every shipment.
Yes. IPA, acetone and methanol are available in technical grade and in pharmacopoeial grades (IP, BP or USP) with tighter limits on water, non-volatile residue and impurities for pharmaceutical use.
Yes. Cosmo Chemistry manufactures and exports Methanol / IPA / Acetone from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in the paints, inks & coatings and basic industrial chemicals industries. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.
Every shipment of Methanol / IPA / Acetone from Cosmo Chemistry includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
