Overview
In brickmaking, barium carbonate stops soluble sulphates causing white efflorescence. Chlor-alkali plants use it to remove sulphate from brine. In glass and glazes it raises refractive index and gives a satin finish.
It is also the raw material for barium salts, electroceramics and ferrite magnets. It is toxic if swallowed.
