Overview

Most nitric acid becomes ammonium nitrate for fertilisers and mining explosives. Its oxidising power also makes it the standard acid for passivating stainless steel, etching, and dissolving metals in refining.

It is supplied at 53–68% concentration, with fuming grades above 90% for special uses. It is corrosive and a strong oxidiser, shipped in approved containers under dangerous goods rules.
