Overview
Emulsifying wax combines cetostearyl alcohol with a non-ionic or anionic emulsifier, so one ingredient both emulsifies and thickens. It is widely used for creams, lotions and ointment bases.
It is supplied as white flakes or pastilles; non-ionic grades (polysorbate or ceteareth based) and pharmacopoeia grades are available.
